The Swayambhunath Temple is full of monkeys may be that is the reason it is called a monkey temple (not sure). The oldest temple in Nepal and history takes us back to 2000 years. The Temple is home for devotees from both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple is influenced by the Vajrayana Buddhism.
Swayambhunath Stupa:
1. The base of the stupa represents the world
2. Eyes represents wisdom and compassion; awakes from the bonds of the world and above these two eyes third eyes (wisdom eyes) symbolizes cosmic rays emanate which acts as messages to heavenly beings
Between two eyes, curly symbolize the nose and mark as Nepali number 1, unity of all things existing in the world 3. The 13 pinnacles symbolize stages of spiritual realization to reach enlightenment
4. Carvings of the Panch Buddhas (metaphorical sense in Tantrayana) on each four sides of the Stupa:
Vairochana: The center and is the master of the temple
Akshobhya: faces the east and represents the cosmic element of consciousness
Ratna Sambhava: faces south and symbolize the cosmic element of sensation
Amitabha: faces west and represents the cosmic element of
Sanjna Amoghsiddhi: faces the north represents the cosmic element of confirmation
