Gautam Buddha International Airport- Inauguration
Gautam Buddha International Airport is a new international airport located in Bhairahawa, a city in the southwestern region of Nepal. It was named after Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, who was born in the nearby town of Lumbini.
The airport was built with the aim of boosting tourism and economic development in the region. It was opened for international flights in March 2020, although due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of flights has been limited.
The airport has a 3,000-meter runway, which can accommodate wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777. It has the capacity to handle up to 5 million passengers annually. The airport also has a modern terminal building with various facilities like duty-free shops, restaurants, and lounges.
The Gautam Buddha International Airport is expected to play a key role in developing the tourism industry in Nepal, especially in the Lumbini area, which is a popular destination for Buddhist pilgrims from around the world.
