Janai Purnima in Nepal
September 17, 2019
Janai Purnima is the festival of Hindus and every Nepalese all around the world. The
festival is observed in the month of Shrawan Purnima (July-August) of nepalese
month. The Hindus men changes their Janai (Janai is the sacred thread worn by
the men in their body). The people pay their homage to Lord Shiva and visit
holy sites such as Kumheshwor (Patan), Gosaikunda, Pashupatinath in this day. Even
for people from non-hindu background in the country, people tie the sacred
threads in their wrist.
This day is known as Gunhi Punhi in Newari community. Newari
community feasts Kwati (sprouted lentils) in this day. Kwati includes different
lentils soaked in the water for few days, which has just begin to sprout. The
months of Asadh, Shrawan and Bhadra bring the monsoon in the country. To immunize
and to energize the body for the changing season, the body requires protein. Hence,
even with the general scientific observation, the Kwati is good for health.
Nowadays, sisters tie rakhi to their siblings as a sibling
love. This is generally, considered as the influence of Indain culture.
However, the mixture of common folk myths and Hindu texts do not consider as
the difference.
Janai Purnma is the time to observe the ancient Hindu
tradition still preserved and followed in the modern days. Even with the mixed
culture and beliefs in present Nepal, the festival is loved, accepted and
adored by every Nepalese person.
